Charlie & Lola Snow is my Favorite and my Best

Charlie & Lola Snow is my Favorite and my Best by Lauren Child

Charlie & Lola in the snow.

Mom's Review: I love the illustrations. The book itself is OK. Don't love it, don't hate it. I have the same opinion as I did last time.

Daughter's Review: I like it because it had snow in it.

The Kissing Hand

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn Illustrations by Ruth E. Harper and Nancy M. Leak

A little raccoon has difficulty letting go of his mom.

Mom's Review: This is a heart-warming book, but really, I don't think it would work for Abby. Luckily, we don't have school separation anxiety; of course, she's only in preschool, but still. The book is sweet, but I wonder how well the technique would really work.

Daughter's Review: I like it because of the kiss on the hand. And I like raccoons. Raccoons might attack you, but they're cute.

Big Words for Little People & Olivia goes to Venice

Big Words for Little People by Jamie Lee Curtis & Laura Cornell

The title explains it all.

Mom's Review: Fun book! I love the word usage and how it explains the words without being obvious definitions. An example:
When you are at school
and you get into trouble
for chewing your gum,
then exploding a bubble,
and you stay inside
when your friends get to play,
your
CONSEQUENCE is
no recess that day.

Daughter's Review:
I liked all of it because it was really funny.

Olivia goes to Venice written and illustrated by Ian Falconer

Our favorite pig visits Italy.

Mom's Review:
Precocious Olivia visits Venice. It's really cool how the backgrounds are actual images of Italy.

Daughter's Review: I didn't like it because I really don't like cities. (Whatever *that* means.)

13 Words

13 Words by Lemony Snicket and Maira Kalman

13 words that aren't usually found in a kids' book (i.e., despondent, panache)are used and explained.

Mom's Review: I love this book. It's so odd, I can't help but be immediately attracted to it! I love the despondent bird. Oh and I am particularly fond of the usage of the word "snazzy." I use that word all the time! I enjoy the art work too. It reminds me of what could be a collaboration between Picasso and Matisse.

Daughter's Review: I liked the big words.

It's Hard to Be Five

It's Hard to Be Five by Jamie Lee Curtis & Laura Cornell

The trials and tribulations of being five.

Mom's Review: A great book that focuses on the plight of five-year-olds. It really makes you think about how much being a kid can suck. Parents always romanticize how much easier it is to be little. But really, it wasn't; you still had problems, they were just different problems. Good book. I really think it's easy for kids to relate.

Daughter's Review: I liked it because the kid was five.
